Challenge Day at Darby High School

Have you every heard of Challenge Day? It is a day long workshop for high school student to help teach acceptance, compassion and kindness.

Pat and I (Emily) had the opportunity to be two of the twenty five adults invited to participate in Challenge Day. It was one of the most incredible (albeit draining) experiences of our lives. We laughed and cried (and cried and cried and cried) with the students and learned about lives that are so much different than ours and in some cases, not so very different at all. We all learned there is more to people than what they show us and that we need to have compassion, understanding and respect for every single person we come in contact with.

We highly encourage any student or adult that has the opportunity to participate in a Challenge Day to sign up immediately. It was most definitely a life changing day not only for us, but for every kid and adult in attendance and for our community as a whole. We truly feel the impact that Challenge Day had on all of us will ripple through and touch so many people in all of our daily lives.

Hilliard Children’s Business Fair

As business owners and parents, Pat and I (Emily) feel the need to help kids in our community. There was no easier or more obvious choice then being mentors for two groups of kids participating at the First Annual Children’s Business Fair. The kids I coached, Noah and Jonah, created Silly Soaps and Smiles which cleverly embeds toys within soap to encourage regular hand washing. When we met, the kids needed some help with profit margins so we had a great discussion and some hands on role play to determine fair pricing and margins. Pat’s kids, Ellia and Naven, were experts with their 3d printer and had some very cool merchandise to sell. He met with them and they worked on some soft selling skills.

The business fair took place at Coffee Connections on April 14, 2018. A great time was had by all and quite a few business skills were picked up by the kid business owners.
